Arbitration

Brian’s career in arbitration began in 1983 on publication of his first award following a charterparty dispute. Some 500 (plus) awards later, his portfolio encompasses a wide range of shipping and energy related disputes including oil-rig and ship construction, charterparties and bills of lading, early termination of COAs and a wide range of casualties.

He is experienced handling arbitrations under LMAA Terms, the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), the Swiss Rules, and many ad-hoc arbitrations.

Having dealt with claims in excess of US $100 million, Brian continues to accept appointments under the LMAA Small Claims Procedure and, in appropriate circumstances, will act on a pro bono basis. Performance disputes are an area of special interest.

He has been a Full Member of the LMAA from 1986 to 1990 and continually since 2003. He has sat as sole arbitrator and on panels alongside retired judges of the High Court, the Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court, the European Court of Justice, and with many well-known international arbitrators.
